    Approaches for an energy and resource efficient manufacturing in the aircraft industry

    Over the recent years, several studies have pointed out the impact of manufacturing on the environment. Especially machining offers great potential for the conservation of energy, resources and the reuse of raw materials. This article gives an overview on the approaches that are currently under investigation at the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools with the aim of improving these aspects. The approaches cover regrinding methods for worn tools, recycling of titanium chips and process planning for hybrid process chains. In the first part of the article, a novel process chain for the automatic regrinding of cemented carbide tools is presented. It is shown that production costs can be reduced significantly, as well as the required energy for production of carbide tools. In the second part of the article, approaches for the recycling of titanium chips from machining processes are described. The last part focuses on the resource and energy efficiency of process chains that contain additive and subtractive processes

    Uropathogenic Escherichia coli Modulates Immune Responses and Its Curli Fimbriae Interact with the Antimicrobial Peptide LL-37

    Bacterial growth in multicellular communities, or biofilms, offers many potential advantages over single-cell growth, including resistance to antimicrobial factors. Here we describe the interaction between the biofilm-promoting components curli fimbriae and cellulose of uropathogenic E. coli and the endogenous antimicrobial defense in the urinary tract. We also demonstrate the impact of this interplay on the pathogenesis of urinary tract infections. Our results suggest that curli and cellulose exhibit differential and complementary functions. Both of these biofilm components were expressed by a high proportion of clinical E. coli isolates. Curli promoted adherence to epithelial cells and resistance against the human antimicrobial peptide LL-37, but also increased the induction of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-8. Cellulose production, on the other hand, reduced immune induction and hence delayed bacterial elimination from the kidneys. Interestingly, LL-37 inhibited curli formation by preventing the polymerization of the major curli subunit, CsgA. Thus, even relatively low concentrations of LL-37 inhibited curli-mediated biofilm formation in vitro. Taken together, our data demonstrate that biofilm components are involved in the pathogenesis of urinary tract infections by E. coli and can be a target of local immune defense mechanisms

    Intimate Partner Violence During COVID-19 Restrictions: A Study of 30 Countries From the I-SHARE Consortium

    Intimate partner violence (IPV) causes substantial physical and psychological trauma. Restrictions introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including lockdowns and movement restrictions, may exacerbate IPV risk and reduce access to IPV support services. This cross-sectional study examines IPV during COVID-19 restrictions in 30 countries from the International Sexual HeAlth and REproductive Health (I-SHARE) study conducted from July 20th, 2020, to February, 15th, 2021. IPV was a primary outcome measure adapted from a World Health Organization multicountry survey. Mixed-effects modeling was used to determine IPV correlates among participants stratified by cohabitation status. The sample included 23,067 participants from 30 countries. A total of 1,070/15,336 (7.0%) participants stated that they experienced IPV during COVID-19 restrictions. A total of 1,486/15,336 (9.2%) participants stated that they had experienced either physical or sexual partner violence before the restrictions, which then decreased to 1,070 (7.0%) after the restrictions. In general, identifying as a sexual minority and experiencing greater economic vulnerability were associated with higher odds of experiencing IPV during COVID-19 restrictions, which were accentuated among participants who were living with their partners. Greater stringency of COVID-19 restrictions and living in urban or semi-urban areas were associated with lower odds of experiencing IPV in some settings. The I-SHARE data suggest a substantial burden of IPV during COVID-19 restrictions. However, the restrictions were correlated with reduced IPV in some settings. There is a need for investing in specific support systems for survivors of IPV during the implementation of restrictions designed to contain infectious disease outbreaks

    In the early 1950ā€™s, ā€˜host-controlled variation in bacterial virusesā€™ was reported as a non-hereditary phenomenon: one cycle of viral growth on certain bacterial hosts affected the ability of progeny virus to grow on other hosts by either restricting or enlarging their host range. Unlike mutation, this change was reversible, and one cycle of growth in the previous host returned the virus to its original form. These simple observations heralded the discovery of the endonuclease and methyltransferase activities of what are now termed Type I, II, III and IV DNA restriction-modification systems. The Type II restriction enzymes (e.g. EcoRI) gave rise to recombinant DNA technology that has transformed molecular biology and medicine.     To explore the relationship between coronary artery disease and renal vascular disease, we performed renal arterial angiography in 609 patients undergoing coronary angiography for suspected coronary artery disease. We defined renal artery stenosis as nonsignificant (60%). One-hundred fifty-two patients had renal artery stenosis, while 457 did not. Two-hundred and ten patients had no coronary disease; of these, only 9 had renal artery stenosis. On the other hand, the 143 patients with renal artery stenosis, when subdivided, had similar degrees of coronary disease; three vessel disease was significantly more common man one or two vessel disease in all groups. Renal artery stenosis of all severity degrees was associated with common atherosclerotic risk factors. However, hypertension was not a clue to the presence of renal artery stenosis. To evaluate the effect of percutaneous revascularization on hypertension and renal function all 51 patients with significant renal artery stenosis were treated by primary stent implantation and were follwed up for 6 months. Stent implantation showed a marked decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (163Ā±30 to 145Ā±17 and 93Ā±18 to 83Ā±10 mmHg; p=0.008) with a decrease in the amount of antihypertensive medication but without beneficial effect on serum creatinine during follow-up (1.46Ā±0.70 mg/dl to 1.39Ā±0.58 mg/dl, p=ns). We conclude that renal artery stenosis of any severity is strongly suggestive of three vessel coronary artery disease. The fact that renal stenting lowers blood pressure decreases antihypertensive drugs and increases medication flexibility in patients with coronary artery disease would support the notion of revascularization in patients with significant stenoses
